Where can I find the best website listing lyrics and music that have now become Public domain ?

Just found out that Stephen Foster’s music is all public domain. Wondering if any of the 1940s and even 1950s music is now Public Domain. I’m needing some music for lyrics I’ve written.
In clarification, I am looking for a Website telling the user what musical compositions from the past are now in Public domain. Sorry for the confusion.

What is the best way to put music to lyrics?

I have the lyrics, and I play guitar. But, I don’t know how to put music to lyrics.

I write a lot of songs. Usually I have to write the words first. Then, I spend a little time thinking of HOW I want the song to sound (happy, sad, whatever). Then, I think of chords that I really like…or have not used previously before.

Another trick I use is to look at the lyrics and sing how I THINK the sound should sound. Then I find those chords/notes on the guitar…

How to find music without lyrics or title?

I know music publishers connect stars with lyrics but how do you get your lyrics to the publishers? I have some pretty good lyrics. Does that mail in program in the magazines work by any chance? I really want my work seen because the words are sooo good! Plz help!

There’s no easy way to fame sadly. I would recommend you sending your lyrics to a literary magazine, such as Stone Soup. If chosen, you will receive a sizable monetary prize, and also the possiblity that some producer may thumb through and see your work!
Magazine mail in programs aren’t usually more effective than simple contests. Don’t waste precious time.

My close friend Jimmy (Robbins) recently got signed to Colombia Records (!) this past summer. He’s 16, and was discovered because he had a purevolume site. His lyrics were fab, though his voice sucked, and he was discovered. I would suggest this route since it worked for him.

I mean commercial songs, please do not consider national anthems or religious songs. I mean songs that have given you the shivers because of their messages or the lyrics or the music notes or the quality of the vocals or everything together. Often if a library doesn’t have an item on its shelves, you can apply for it to be sent through inter-library loan. It is also available in Vol. I of the Sondheim anthology.
