Is classical music relevant to the rock music we listen to today?

Author: admin  //  Category: rock music

I want to apply for the Arts Concentration program at my school for music, which puts a lot of emphasis on the classical genre.

I was just wondering, how relevant is classical music to rock, alternative, hard rock, and metal? I know the rules of music should apply to all genres, but will I be able to apply what I learn about classical music to the rock music I hope to compose in the future?

Just wondering.

Thanks!

The answer is most definitely yes. Classical music is the basis for all music we here today. Take rock music for example: Your basic rock or pop song is composed of a verse, then refrain, verse, refrain, bridge/modulation, refrain. This is pure music theory. By studying the music theory behind this simple formula, you will understand why the chords work the way they work, why they sound the way they do, and where the music can lead you. You can also learn alternative progressions, rather than just the standard I-IV-V-I progression.

On top of this, by knowing music theory, you will be able to look at any piece of music and be able to analyze it. For example, you will be able to tell where the bridge is by a quick glance, what the song sounds like, and also be able to easily find mistakes.

All the good rock, alternative and other popular musicians have a good sense of classical music. I know of many who have, or currently study classical music, and classical voice training, including Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Cyndi Lauper, Christina Aguilera, and Billie Joe Armstrong (Lead for Green Day). They have spoken numerous times about the value of knowing about classical music and theory.

Also, by knowing about music theory and they historical progression of music, you will be able to further explore in your compositions to provide for unique compositions that can define you on a higher level, rather than just the standard "norm" in the current music scenes.

Hope this helps.

RoCk MuSiC? ****************?

Is it just me or does rock music lyrics particularly indie rock music lyrics not make any sense

It’s like the fans of that sort of music appreciate the instrumental music a lot more than the lyrics and do not care if the lyrics make any sense or not

indie rock fans may interpret their own meaning to each song rather than focus on what it the band actually meant

even if the songs did have meaning the meaning is obscured and difficult to understand thus making it harder to believe the bands in question actually have something to say

I’ve noticed this with pop music as well but I don’t mind it so much with pop because it is just there to be enjoyed where as with rock fans you get these over opinionated pretentious cobblers who will but lick anything as long as they think it’s cool

Am I alone in thinking this?

Rock music lyrics… Discuss

I may have put my thoughts and feelings on this matter rather harshly and I would like to say I did not mean any offence

I would also appreciate civilised answers

cheers No Picture

All bands (read: all real bands that play music for the joy of it) have lyrics that mean something to them. The wonderful thing about music is that it is wide open for interpretation. Sometimes you never know what the song is actually about, but instead it involves you to put your own story and your own thoughts into it. IMO, rock music has the most meaningful lyrics out of any other music genre. I’m also speaking about rock as a whole, as I’m not really familiar with many Indie bands.

Though, if you are curious as to what other people are thinking about certain songs, look it up on songmeanings.com

You would think The Beatles had nothing to say when they wrote Come Together because the lyrics are just so bizarre and random, yet I’m hearing the song is about different drugs. Try to interpret this yourself.

Here come old flattop he come grooving up slowly
He got joo-joo eyeball he one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what he please

He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football
He got monkey finger he shoot coca-cola
He say "I know you, you know me"
One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
Come together right now over me

He bag production he got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard he one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knee
Hold you in his armchair you can feel his disease
Come together right now over me

He roller-coaster he got early warning
He got muddy water he one mojo filter
He say "One and one and one is three"
Got to be good-looking ’cause he’s so hard to see
Come together right now over me

What are some of the greatest rock music videos made?

Author: admin  //  Category: rock music

I have plenty of money for iTunes, thanks to Christmas, and I would like to purchase some music videos. However, due to my naiveness about rock music videos, I really don’t know which are the best. What are some phenomeonal rock music videos?

I’m a bit eclectic in my tastes, but I really like the following:

Losing my Religion R.E.M
Once In A Lifetime Talking Heads
Alive and Kicking Simple Minds
The Boys Of Summer Don Henley
Girls on Film Duran Duran ( only because they got away with a lot at that time! )
Rock of Ages Def Leppard
Criminal Fiona Apple
To be a Lover Billy Idol
The Confessor Joe Walsh
Ashes to Ashes David Bowie

What rock music was played during the 89 invasion of panama?

Author: admin  //  Category: rock music

When Bush invaded Panama, and Noriega stayed in the Vatican mission and wouldn’t come out, they played rock music to make sure no one could listen in on them, and also because Noriega hated rock music. What bands and songs did they play?
I had heard Metallica was played too Bob S :)

I am almost certain that Metalica was played. I think the song "One" was heavily played.
